Greyhawk

Welcome to the Flanaess, a land of mighty kingdoms and darker powers, of ancient ruins and roads that grow less safe with every passing year.

The old empire of Aerdy, which once held sway from the Solnor shore to the inland sea, has fractured. Its proud provinces stand as sovereign realms now, watchful of one another and of the gathering shadows beyond their borders. Iuz the Old, demigod and tyrant, rules a horror-state in the north and dreams of conquest. In the wild lands, bandit lords carve out their petty tyrannies. Humanoid hordes press the marches. Slaver brotherhoods whisper in the southern jungles.

The gods walk the world and mighty wizards delve the ruins of fallen civilizations. The dark places multiply, and the kings of the civilized lands are too occupied with what they hold to confront what stirs in the deep woods and the buried tombs. Such matters fall, in the end, to those few bold or foolish enough to ride out beyond the village walls — those few called adventurers.
